Army computer expert joins research group

Article Abstract:

Alan B. Salisbury, formerly a major general in the Army Signal Corps, is named executive vice president and chief operating officer of Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corp, a computer industry consortium. Salisbury will share responsibilities with Craig Fields, who is chief executive, and with Barry H. Whalen, VP for marketing and customer services. So far, the consortium has not produced satisfactory returns for its member companies, and Fields, who was formerly with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is trying to transform it into a more businesslike organization that commercializes more of the technology it develops.

President of Microsoft plans June retirement

Article Abstract:

Jon A. Shirley, pres and COO of Microsoft Corp, will retire in Jun 1990. Shirley, 51, has been with the software developer and manufacturer since 1983, will not seek another position in the industry. Prior to heading Microsoft, Shirley spent 25 years at Tandy Corp, where he began as a salesman in the company's Radio Shack stores after dropping out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Analysts suspect Shirley will be hard to replace because of the strong personality of Microsoft's founder and CEO William H. Gates.

Microsoft president comes from Boeing

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp has a new president and chief operating officer. He is Michael H. Hallman, president of Boeing Company's Computer Services division. Hallman, who will join Microsoft on Apr 2, 1990, replaces Jon Shirley, who announced his retirement in Dec 1989. The No. 2 job at Microsoft is seen as a difficult spot because it requires working day-to-day in the shadow of Bill Gates, a 'brilliant but demanding boss.' Hallman says he has gotten to know Gates over the past few months, and does not anticipate any problems.
