The Citizens Budget Commission issued a report that shows New Yorkers pay the highest local taxes in the US. Counties are forced to raise property taxes to handle state mandates that are rising faster than the rate of inflation. The report indicates that New York residents pay property and sales taxes that are 72% above the national average. What critics of New York taxes believe is unfair is that the legislature passes social programs and takes responsibility for providing services to state residents but local property taxes are critical to their availability to low-income families.
