Attack on public schools: has the education "crisis" been overstated?

Article Abstract:

More people are challenging the widespread notion that a crisis exists in the educational system and believe the crisis may have been fabricated by supporters of private schools. Psychology professors David C. Berliner and Bruce J. Biddle claim US schools have improved and conservatives are criticizing public schools in order to get tax breaks to send their children to private schools. A former education secretary wrote that a major educational decline occurred between 1950 and 1989 as evidenced by a drop in Scholastic Aptitude Test scores.

Child labor and sweatshops: Do U.S. consumers abet worker exploitation?

Article Abstract:

Child labor and sweat shops have become more common with the growing number of U.S. retail conglomerates seeking low-paying suppliers of labor around the world. In the U.S., sweat shop operators, especially in New York City and Los Angeles, are exploiting illegal immigrants, violating wage and tax laws, and using children to work full-time and overtime. Human rights activists, celebrities and others are joining forces to stop this trend.

Is the reported decline in public education quality largely a myth?

Article Abstract:

Some people believe the decline in public education quality is manufactured, while others think schools are inadequate and students are not functioning well. Proponents of quality public schools say evidence demonstrates that American schools are doing well compared to their foreign counterparts, but opponents say American students do very poorly in mathematics, and not much better in geography and secondary school science.
