France is dealing with a new kind of antisemitism that is engaging Muslims in attacks against French Jews and those who have a North African Jewish background. Pres. Jacques Chirac has declared his commitment to treat this problem at the highest level of government, but he faces the hostility that is generated by daily news coverage of the Iraq war and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. France has 600,000 Jews, the third largest Jewish population after Israel and the US.
