Attempts at reform

Article Abstract:

The Central Intelligence agency (CIA) has been accused of engaging in illegal operations and withholding information from the Congress. A committee, set up in 1976, under Senator Frank Church found that the agency had launched several amateurish operations to assassinate foreign leaders, such as Fidel Castro and carried out surveillance against American citizens. Despite attempts to restrain the CIA, the Agency under William J. Casey was involved in arms deals with Iranian contras. Experts feel that CIA's intelligence analysis wing is highly politicicized and therefore failed to predict important international changes in the 1990s.

Spy vs. spy: overkill in the U.S. intelligence community

Article Abstract:

Several intelligence agencies conduct international and domestic espionage and there is little coordination amongst them. As a result these agencies often infringe on each others territory and duplicate operations. Conflict between military and civilian agencies, absence of a central coordinating agency and competition for budgetary allocations is the main cause of conflict between agencies, such as National Reconnaissance Office, Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The government is trying to reorganize the secret services by improving the monitoring powers of the DIA.

After the Cold War

Article Abstract:

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is being reorganized and its goals redefined to meet the challenges of the changing world order. The CIA has already diverted its manpower and resources from the communist bloc countries to deal with problems such as narcotics trade, terrorism and nuclear poliferation. It is also concentrating on issues, such as environmental protection and economic intelligence, to protect American interests. Attempts are being made to improve coordination and accountability of the CIA.
