B.C. grocer heads for mainland

Article Abstract:

Privately-owned supermarket chain Thrifty Foods of Saanichton, British Columbia, has thrived as the dominant food retailer on Vancouver Island with 15 stores. The company, which employs 2,200 employees, has an estimated annual revenue of C$300 million. Thrifty has announced its plan to open its first store on the British Columbia mainland in a move to expand its operations. The new store in Tsawwassen is scheduled to open by summer of 2000.

Pacific Wall Nut cracks amusement market

Pacific Wall Nuts Climbing Services Inc of Vancouver, British Columbia, installs and operates climbing walls at amusement parks. The company acts as a concessionaire in which it assumes the costs and risks of operating the attractions, including staff and payroll management. The company, which was formed in 1996 by president Sean Fader, has 19 installations in the US and one in Canada.
