B.C. preparing ambitious plan to fuel economy

Article Abstract:

The British Columbian government will launch a stimulus program to jumpstart its sagging economy. The program, which aims to stimulate at least sectors of the provincial economy, will likely include tax breaks for high technology industries, aid for the forest industry and faster approval for ski-hill developments. However, the stimulus program is expected to increase the provincial government's spending and reduce its revenues. British Columbia is already facing a C$660-million deficit in the first six months of 1998.

Furious critics condemn B.C. slot-machine plan

Article Abstract:

The British Columbian government has announced a legislative proposal that would give the province complete control over casinos. The proposed legislation would enable the government to fully operate the 17 former charity casinos it recently took over and allocate the revenue to the provincial coffer. The provincial government would keep almost all of C$330-per-year revenue of the casinos in the first two years, and C$400 million annually within five years.

B.C. plans to force slot machines into cities

Article Abstract:

The British Columbia government plans to introduce legislation Feb 2, 1999, to install slot machines into casinos despite big city opposition. Municipalities led by Vancouver have been actively campaigning against the gambling equipment in casinos, which officials say incur social costs due to their addictive power while revenues are enjoyed by the province. The proposal also pulls out the provincial lottery corporation from bingo operations.
