Rubbery bends retail boundaries

Article Abstract:

Rubbery Warehouse owner Janine DeFreitas intends to open four additional warehouse stores in the Toronto, Ontario, area by spring of 1999. Rubber Warehouse in Mississauga, Ontario, is a 20,000-sq-ft warehouse store filled with nearly all the products of Wooster, OH-based Rubbermaid Inc. The warehouse carries all seven Rubbermaid lines, including Graco baby products. DeFreitas hopes to later bring the warehouse store concept throughout Canada. Rubbery gained an instant position in the market because of the Rubbermaid brand recognication and its reputation. The warehouse estimates a C$3.5 million in revenue in 1998.

Kinko's aims to be more than copycat

Article Abstract:

Kinko's Inc., a chain of copying centers based in Ventura, CA, aspires to establish a global network of one-stop shops offering all the printing needs of international businesses. Using the latest communications technology, company founder and chairman Paul Orfalea hopes to capture a significant share of the global printing market estimated at C$60 billion a year. To help achieve that goal, Orfalea plans to take the company public, although he would not tell when. He is also forming alliances with local companies, such as the team up with Richard Branson, head of Virgin Group PLC.
