Bacchus to the future: Australia's embrace of the wine grape has resulted in an oversupply that will leave many reeling but a well-placed few reaping. Ivor Ries tells a cautionary tale

Article Abstract:

Australia is experiencing a serious grape glut, with an oversupply nearing 20% with some varieties, along with the subsequent price drop. Investment in Australian grapes was a great idea between 1996 and 2001, though not all those involved will be hurt by the glut. Big wine exporters will benefit, while growers who grew premium quality grapes will not be affected as adversely as those that grew lower quality grapes.
