Background

Article Abstract:

The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was the first law that regulated the drug industry as a reaction against 'patent drugs.' The Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938, the basis for modern drug laws, required governmental approval of new drugs prior to marketing. A 1962 revision compelled companies to supply proof of the new drug's effectivity. The Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act 1984 dealt with price issues that were becoming controversial, especially in the senior citizen sector. The repealed 1988 Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act provided for prescription drug coverage.

Background

Article Abstract:

The history of public libraries began in the US when John Harvard donated 300 volumes from his private collection to a Cambridge, MA, college. Benjamin Franklin launched the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1731, a subscription library that became the model for many libraries in the North America and in Europe. It was an important milestone for promoting intellectual equality among the Americans of that time. The first public library was begun in Peterborough, NH, in 1833 when the Rev Abiel Abbott convinced citizens to finance the Peterborough Town Library with state money.

The drug approval process

Article Abstract:

The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) task is to ensure the safety and effectiveness of a drug prior to public sale. The key steps for approval include pre-clinical animal tests and three phases of clinical trials after which a New Drug Application is filed. The process is long and tedious. The drug company is required to supply the FDA with progress reports on the drug after approval.
