Background: War on poverty

Article Abstract:

New ideas about child development revived interest in early-childhood education where studies suggested that social programs might help improve the lives of poor or disabled children. An initiative run by the new Office of Economic Opportunity focused on poor adults, which included programs such as the Job Corps that offered young adults employment training, and the Community Action Program (CAP) to help groups of poor people organize programs to fight poverty.

Giving parents a Head Start, too

Article Abstract:

The National Head Start Association has revealed that Head Start changes parents' lives as well as the lives of their children, not only teaching parents but also how to get a job or go to college. Head Start staff members must help families obtain additional services such as mental-health assistance, literacy education for parents, employment training and emergency assistance to obtain housing, transportation and other necessities.

Cosmetic fad has dentists smiling, too

Article Abstract:

American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) and a growing number of traditional dentists are offering cosmetic procedures to dental services are discussed. The number of teeth-whitening procedures grew by 300 percent, and sales of invisible braces-which cost up to $5000-grew 75 percent, while the number of veneer procedures rose to 250 percent.
