Bad girls: a brutal B.C. murder sounds an alarm about teenage violence

Article Abstract:

Reena Virk, 14, was viciously beaten, then left to drown on Nov 14, 1997, in Saanich, British Columbia. Eight teens have been arrested for her murder, seven of them girls. Experts say violence appears to be increasing among teen girls, and is often motivated by the need to control and conform.

Residents of Vernon, BC, struggle to make sense of the massacre of 8 family members by estranged husband Vijay Chahal who then killed himself. Some blame the killings on the Sikh tradition of arranged marriages, while others note that family violence is not unique to practicing Sikhs.

The parents of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy appeared on the show 'National Magazine' to talk about the torture, rape and murder of their daughters by Paul Bernardo. The Mahaffy's and French's hope that Bernardo will be declared a dangerous offender with no possibility of parole.
