Ballmer bets all on dot-net

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has announced the software company's biggest undertaking since the launching of its graphical-user interface in the early 1980s. Ballmer has launched Microsoft.net, a technological gambit that represents Microsoft's intention to revamp its product line over the next several years. The shift marks a bold transition from personal computers to a new generation of Internet-based software that allows consumers and businesses to exchange information via wireless phones, digital TVs and personal computers.

Novell to lay off 900, focus on rebuilding

Article Abstract:

Novell Inc of Provo, UT, has announced the reduction of its workforce by another 900 individuals on Sep 6, 2000, a number equal to 16% of its total workers. The software company, which will take a one-time charge of as much as $50 million for the quarter ending Oct 31, 2000, because of the lay-offs, expects to save about $25 million per quarter beginning early 2001. Novell COO Stewart Nelson also announced an overhaul of its sales unit and the launch of a TV ad campaign in Sep 2000.

Disheartened Microsofties jump ship

Article Abstract:

Microsoft employees are lured by offers from other companies and new opportunities to earn riches in the Internet world. The factor fueling the possible mass exodus of engineers from Microsoft is the concern over the possible two-way split of the company. The biggest challenge, therefore, for the software company is how to retain its employees. Some executives who have founded their own companies include Brad Silverberg, Naveen Jain, Sanjay Kumar, Hadi Partovi and Sung Rhee.
