Ban nuclear tests?

Article Abstract:

The US remains adamant in opposing the nuclear tests ban. This not only reflects a half-hearted devotion by the US to nuclear arms control, but also the double standard of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Although the NPT restricts non-weapon countries from developing nuclear weapons, the treaty has condoned acquisition of and progress in nuclear technology of countries already with weapons. The US has within its power of influence the ability to encourage other nations into abstaining from nuclear weapons development, or setting an example of total disregard for nuclear arms control regulations.

Hopeful signs

Article Abstract:

Nuclear threat still exists, but the cooperation of some countries in the pursuit of nuclear arms control has shed some hope for the future. Both Russia and the US are willing to limit nuclear arms. South Africa, for its part, chooses to eradicate nuclear weapons altogether. Brazil and Argentina have decided to abandon the destructive weapons and adopt a program which entitles each to inspect the facilities of the other. Meanwhile, France and China have decided to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Export challenges

Article Abstract:

The export of nuclear technology is more widespread than ever since the breakup of USSR. Transactions of nuclear technology are legalized in the guise of companies selling peaceful nuclear weapons technology. Imposing export control is made even more difficult by the classification of dual purpose items such as supercomputers, uranium and special steel alloys that can be used for both military and commercial objectives.
