Banana ruling boosts U.S. in C-55 fight

Article Abstract:

The US is pressuring Canada to retreat from its planned restrictions on foreign magazines. Canada has drafted Bill C-55 which bans Canadians from advertising on split-run editions. The US warned the C-55 mocks the WTO dispute settlement process and threatened to impose punitive tariffs on billions of dollars worth of Canadian steel, wood, plastics and apparel products. Canada has earlier lost an appeal on a WTO ruling that ruled down a steep excise tax the denied the access of foreign magazines to the C$500-million-a-year Canadia advertising market.
