Alliance, A&E pitted in a battle of word

Article Abstract:

Alliance Communications Corp. of Toronto, Canada, has filed a countersuit against Arts and Entertainment Network (A&E) in reaction to an earlier suit filed by A&E against Alliance over a trademark dispute on the word "biography." A&E, which has a trademark on the word and other related terms in the US based on the TV network's show titled "Biography," has applied for the same trademark in Canada. Alliance had earlier sought the approval of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for a specialty channel called Biography Television prior to A&E's lawsuit. Alliance contends that A&E can not trademark a word that is in general use.

Philip hires turnaround specialist

Article Abstract:

Philip Services Corp., a scrap metal and industrial service provider, has named Jack McGregor, a principal of the Detroit, MI-based consulting firm Jay Alix & Associates, as CEO. McGregor immediately talked with creditors about a restructuring program. He said that he proposed to the bank consortium to mull over the postponement of the payment on the interest of Philip's $1.1-billion debt to save cash. McGregor said that the clear objective is to reorganize the company without having to go through insolvency proceedings. He, however, said that if the problem becomes critical, the company has to consider other options.
