Hnatyshyn served as the Queen's representative since 1990, and worked with three different prime ministers. He says he is proud of making the office more open and feels Queen Elizabeth II still commands enormous respect in Canada. Romeo LeBlanc will become the new governor general.

Back from the brink: in the final days, the federalists had an air of desperation

Article Abstract:

Polls in Sep 1995 had indicated that a comfortable majority of people opposed Quebec independence, but Bloc Quebecois leader Lucien Bouchard's emphasis on the positive aspects of secession made the vote very close. Federalists were relieved that the referendum was defeated.

Promises and pain

Article Abstract:

Both American and Canadian political credibility is disintegrating under huge campaign promises that nobody - not candidates, press, nor the public - takes seriously. Budget, health care, and Quebec independence issues are among the most egregious examples of recent years.
