Black eye for Conrad Black

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating about $15.6 million unauthorized payments to Conrad Black and other top executives of the Hollinger Company. Hollinger Company holds media assets throughout the world and it is suspected that Hollinger Company has taken the unauthorized money as a guarantee from the buyers of newspapers that Black divested in 1999 and 2001 for not competing directly with them.

A mogul's migraine

Article Abstract:

Rupert Murdoch was on top of the world when the Australian court cleared the way for him to transplant his News Corp. Empire to the United States, with its shares shifting to the New York Stock Exchange in 2004. However, his old friend John Malone started the first sign of the trouble at hand by acquiring nearly 60 million voting shares, a mammoth block of News Corp. stock.

The television network ABC's earnings have gone from a $400 mil profit in 1995, the year it was acquired by Disney, to a $100 mil loss in 1998. The network is trying to get its affiliates to help pay for expensive programming. ABC and other networks have seen their viewership taken by the Internet, so they are researching ways to take advantage of on-line programming.
