Blue sky minefield

Article Abstract:

Innovations in Australia's air traffic control systems have allowed the service to become globalized and privatized, and some critics claim that the new technology will lead to fewer jobs and less safety. Dick Smith, chairman of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, has criticized safety standards and, although pilots support him, chief executives from Qantas and Ansett have called for his resignation. The most lucrative contracts in aviation are for international airports, and critics claim high-quality navigational services are emphasized on international routes at the expense of regional and local routes.

Get ready for a bumpy flight

Article Abstract:

The Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association fears powerful alliances within the airline industry will lead to decreased job security and harmful work practices. Increasingly, airlines have begun to cut costs by sending jets to engineering hubs in countries where labor is cheap. The International Transport Workers Federation will host meetings to discuss plans to encourage union participation in the airlines' decision-making process to avoid potential strikes.
