Investment banker Richard Li is trying to persuade Australian investors to buy stock in Chinese firms. He believes the alarm caused by the bankruptcy of Guandong International Trust and Investment Corporation has created positive opportunities for long-term investors. His company, Sino Securities International (SSI), is transferring most of its portfolio of Chinese investments to China Construction Holdings, which will extinguish a $46 mil debt owed to it by SSI.

High ho, silver

Article Abstract:

Investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway purchase of almost 20% of the world's annual production of silver in 1998 pushed the commodity to a 10-year high. This came as good news to Australian silver producer BHP which has recently commissioned the largest silver mine production sight in the world. Other junior resource companies and small exploration companies have seen their share prices increase.

Banking on the bourse: analysts are predicting strong growth for bank shares in 1998 amid a somewhat bearish market

Article Abstract:

The consensus among Australian analysts is that banks and other financial institutions offer good returns. Investors should buy more of their stocks because if bank shares start falling, investors quickly step in to buy their stocks. They also carry less risk because they are growing their fund management and generating more fee income in order to be less dependent on interest rates.
