Bureau Vows To Tighten Its Audits Of Circulation

Article Abstract:

In their annual conference in Toronto, the Audit Bureau of Circulations announced that they will hire more staff in the next year. The nonprofit organization which tracks newspaper and periodical circulation figures for the advertising industry, will crack down on fraud and impose a stricter definition of paid copies.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating several newspaper companies after Newsday, Hoy, The Dallas Morning News and The Chicago Sun-Times, admitted to overstating their circulation figures. Circulation statistics are used to set advertising rates, and to determine the investment value of a company.
