Businesses fill void from Northwest strike

Article Abstract:

Northwest Airlines' pilot strike is affecting several local economies in the US. Scott Beem, co-owner of Bette Bus, a shuttle company based in Memphis, TN, stated that the company will probably employ a 47-seat bus instead if the usual 15-seat vans over Labor Day as Northwest in issuing vouchers to stranded travellers so they can take the Bette Bus from Memphis to fly from Little Rock, AR. National Car Rental of Minneapolis, MN, is also anxious that the strike would hurt its operations as the firm relies much on airport traffic.

Seattle's newspapers hit by strike

Article Abstract:

The Pacific Northwest Newspaper guild has staged a strike against the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer after negotiations between both sides collapsed on Nov 20, 2000. The guild represents employees in the newspapers' newsroom, advertising, circulation and marketing departments. Workers are asking for higher pay, better retirement benefits and more paid leaves. Both newspapers have made a final offer of $3.30 per hour over a six-year period but the guild wants a raise of $6.15 per hour over three years.

Protesters prepare to make views known at trade summit

Critics of US trade policies are preparing to mass protest the upcoming summit sessions of the 134-nation World Trade Organization (WTO) that will begin on Nov 30, 1999. Billboards and bus placards being set up across Seattle, WA, as part of a $40,000 advertising campaign suggest that US trade negotiators are making secret deals favoring corporate interests that will infringe labor and human rights or harm the environment.
