CAW vows no CN strike for 3 months

Article Abstract:

Canadian National Railway Co.'s (CN) Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) has assured shippers that they will not go on strike for at least three months in an effort to obtain more time for negotiating a labor contract. The union also warned the shipping industry about a possible worker lockout that will be instigated by CN by late July, 1998. Abe Rosner, a national representative with the union, said that they will not be responsible for any stalls in the negotiation, since the company appears to be pushing for a lockout or strike. However, CN spokesman Scott Roberts said that the company also seeks to settle a contract with the union as soon as possible.

Air Canada to cut more jobs in '99

Article Abstract:

Air Canada, based in Montreal, Canada, is slated to lay off another 450 employees in 1999 as part of a company-wide cost-reduction program. The move came despite the carrier's recovery from a 13-day pilot strike that was estimated to have cut operating profit by C$250 million and final profit by C$155 million. The layoff adds to the 1,275 jobs eliminated since summer 1998.
