CEO washes down crow with a tall glass of Coke

Article Abstract:

The chairman of softdrink giant Coca-Cola Co has apologized to the people of Belgium for two quality-control incidents that caused nausea and dizziness to more than 100 Belgians. Chairman M Douglas Ivester made the apology in a letter published through full-newspaper ads throughout Belgium. The company traced the problems to bad carbon dioxide in its Antwerp, Belgium, bottler and to traces of fungicide on wooden pallets used at it facility in Dunkirk, France. Coke's products were banned in Belgium, Luxembourg, France and the Netherlands because of the incidents.

Coke gambles consumers will swallow higher prices

Article Abstract:

Coca-Cola Co and its bottling arm Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc plan to raise prices by perhaps 6% in 2000 after having already instituted similar price increases by a similar percentage in 1999. This brings about the issue of whether consumers will accept the higher rates at a time when they have become used to declining prices on cars, mortgage payments and computers. Skepticism on the wisdom of the action has already adversely affected Coca Cola Enterprises' stock value.

Coke pulled from some European markets

Article Abstract:

Coca-Cola has recalled millions of canned and bottled soft drinks in Belgium, Luxembourg and some parts of France and the Netherlands after over a hundred Belgian children who had consumed Coke products were taken ill. Company officials blamed bad carbon dioxide in its plant in Antwerp, Belgium, and traces of a pallet fungicide on some cans from its plant in Dunkirk, France, for the illnesses. The recall is not expected to have a significant impact on Coke sales.
