CHINA/HONG KONG: AGRICULTURAL FIRMS TO BE LISTED

Shares of Chinese dairy products maker, Ningxia Xiajin Dairy & Beverages (Xiajin) may be floated on Shanghai stock market. Scheduled for listing earliest in year 2001's final quarter, the firm will get related financial consulting services and backing from Guangdong (International) Capital and Guoxin Securities, respectively. Meanwhile, Xianjin's stake has been eyed by American pharmaceutical firm, Wyeth. Separately, another agricultural concern from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in China, Guangxia (Yinchuan) Industry is proceeding with its listing plan in Hong Kong. Shares of the wine maker and grapes grower will be traded starting from September 2001. ICEA Securities from Hong Kong has been assigned to undertake the firm's listing.

CHINA: FOREIGN TOURIST NUMBER HITS 83.48 MN

In year 2000, a total of 83.48-mn overseas tourists visited China, representing an improvement of 15% from year 1999. Of the total, 10.2-mn travellers came from countries except Macau, Taiwan and Hong Kong, registering a 20% hike. In other words, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau tourists accounted for 73.28-mn of tourist arrivals in China in year 2000. In year 2000, some RMB 317.6-bn worth of revenue was generated from Chinese tourists, up by 12% from year 1999. In year 2001, the National Tourism Administration predicts that in-bound foreign visitors will amount to 90 mn, bringing in some US$ 18 bn or HK$ 140 bn of foreign currency. In total, China is expected to rake in RMB 500-bn worth of tourism income.
