CRTC asked to review Look licence

Article Abstract:

Milton, Ontario-based Look Communications Inc. has its license to provide multi-channel multipoint distribution system (MMDS) services in Canada scrutinized by cable firms in the country. Regulators for the broadcasting business were requested by Canadian cable firms to evaluate Look Communications' license anew. The development was brought forth by concerns that Look Communications does not comply with the limits set on ownership of Canadian firms by foreign entities. Look Communications' corporate parent, Montreal, Quebec-based Teleglobe Inc., was involved with Dallas, TX-based Excel Communications Inc. in a $3.5-billion stock-swap merger deal that will create a new firm that is 48.5%-owned by Excel Communications. The agreement, in effect, resulted to industry concerns regarding foreign ownership of Look Communications.

CTV eliminates 131 positions

Article Abstract:

CTV Inc has eliminated 131 jobs, laying off 119 employees in local TV stations across Canada. The layoff, which reduced the number of workers to 1,807, is needed to boost the company's weak financial performance and to ensure the viability of local televisions as national advertising revenue shifts away from selective local to regional and national markets. CTV said that the staff cuts would result in savings of C$8 million in annual operating expenses.
