Cambior reports record gold production, slim profit in quarter

Article Abstract:

Cambior Inc., a mining company based in Montreal, Canada, has reported a record 34% increase in gold production to 163,000 ounces for the second quarter of 1998 from 122,000 ounces in the same year-ago period. However, the company posted a slim profit for the quarter ended Jun. 30, 1998, at $2.1 million, or 3 cents per share, compared to $200,000, or about zero cents a share, in the past year. The slight increase in profit for the quarter is attributed to an aggressive hedge position adopted by Cambior that lessened the effect of a weak gold price.
