Can Urban Fashion Be Def in Des Moines?

Article Abstract:

Russell Simmons, the former owner of Def Jam Recording, is working on a deal to sell his clothing company Phat Fashions for $200 million, but still maintain managerial control and his right to a percentage of clothing sale profits.? What he seeks from this new business arrangement is an opportunity to expand distribution in department stores which carry only 15% of his products.?The rest are carried in specialty stores, such as Jimmy Jazz and Up Against the Wall. Simmons also wants to sell more products in white-dominated fashion sectors. He works closely with his wife, Kimora Lee Simmons, a former model who operates his women's and children's clothing company Baby Phat. He? has other business ventures, including Def Con3 soda and the Rush Card, a prepaid Visa Card for those who cannot access banking services.

Jones Is Said to Be Near a Deal for Barneys

Since upscale clothing store, Barney's Inc., went on the market last June, several department stores and private investors, including Elie Tahari and Nelson Peltz, appeared to be potential buyers. Clothing manufacturer, Jones Apparel Group Inc. will take over Barney's in a $400 million deal expected to be announced today.
