Canada, U.S. strile timber-cutting fee deal

Article Abstract:

The US and Canada have established an agreement to settle a conflict covering lower timber-cutting rates for British Columbia. The agreement calls for BC to limit softwood lumber exports based on average historic volumes established prior to the province's move to reduce mill charges for harvesting trees. Lower stumpage fees were established for excess shipments effective Jun 1998.

U.S. adds to Canadian trade targets

Charlene Barshefsky, the United States Trade Representative, has criticized Canadian long distance telephone service regulations. The U.S. has claimed that Toronto, Ont.-based Bell Canada is favored by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission over foreign phone companies.
