Transfer of power; should Canada take command of the UN force?

Article Abstract:

UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has asked Canada to assume leadership of United Nations peacekeeping troops when the US completes its withdrawal by the end of Feb 1995. Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy has promised to investigates Canada's chance of success before committing troops.

Canada's troops head home: the end of the UN peacekeeping mission raises fears for Haiti's future

Article Abstract:

The UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti officially ended on Nov 30, 1997, and the 1,200 troops, including 650 Canadian soldiers, will leave the country soon. The UN says the Haitian National Police is ready to take over, but privately some leaders worry about the country's long-term prospects for peace.

Breaking a deadlock: Canada goes it alone by paying for its own UN peacekeeping force

Article Abstract:

Canada agreed to provide 700 troops at the nation's own expense to supplement the 1,200-strong UN peacekeeping force in Haiti. This prevented a crisis over the transfer of power from US to UN forces. China had threatened to veto the transfer due to anger over Haiti's relations with Taiwan.
