Caring for the elderly

Article Abstract:

Many issues are involved with care of the elderly. Many improvements have emerged, mostly as a result of the 1987 Nursing Home Reform Act that placed tighter regulation and oversight on the nursing home industry and addressed quality of life there for the first time. Malnutrition is, however, still a potentially serous problem often not detected and not treated adequately if at all. Often no one takes time to feed patients although food is set before them. By 2060 the number in the US needing long-term care is to reach 24 mil vs 1.6 mil in nursing homes in 1997.

Population and the environment

Article Abstract:

The earth's population growth from 1.6 bil people at the beginning of the 20th century to 6 bil people at the end of the century has renewed the debate over how many people the earth can support. Environmentalists contend the continuing rise in population will cause disasters such as global shortages of food, water, and natural resources, and the potential collapse of human race. However, others believe humans will always come up with ways to accomodate the earth's growing population.

Russia's political future: will voters turn the clock back in June?

Article Abstract:

Russian President Boris Yeltsin is fighting to stay in power and continue his economic and political reforms. Yeltsin faces Communist party leader Gennadi A. Zyuganov in the June 16, 1966 presidential elections, the first since the break-up of the Soviet Union. Yeltsin's reforms have not benefitted the average Russian citizen who was guaranteed employment, food, shelter, and a nonviolent society. Yeltsin fears defeat if the war in Chechnya continues.
