Howard government's appointed chairman Donald McDonald's imminent departure from the ABC in July 2006 has created tensions between Prime Minister John Howard and Treasurer Peter Costello. McDonald's departure has brought the number of vacancies on the ABC board to four and the ABC board is yet to appoint a new managing director to replace Russell Balding.
