Chip-set maker at a crucial turn

Article Abstract:

Chips and Technologies Inc will introduce microprocessors that can be used in lieu of the Intel 80386DX and 386SX chips and will not require computer manufacturers to redesign their machines. The chips are touted as 10 percent faster than the equivalent Intel chips. Two other microprocessors, also compatible with the 386DX and SX, offers 30- to 50 percent greater performance than Intel's but will require computer makers to redesign their products. Chips will also announce an all-in-one chip for handheld computers using a simpler 8086 microprocessor. The company's new product line is crucial to its future: if successful, it could restore Chips to its former stature as a leading semiconductor company; if it fails, the company may not survive in the long run. Chips and Technologies, despite its products' superior features, is up against Intel's market lead and greater resources for advertising, price competition and technological advancement.

Selling now in Tokyo: tiniest I.B.M. portable

Article Abstract:

Super-lightweight notebook-sized microcomputers from IBM - not yet available in the US - are already on sale in Japan. This is because of competitive pressure from Japanese companies such as NEC and Toshiba. IBM's product, the IBM PS/55 Note, which weighs about five pounds, costs between $1,680 and $2,550, depending on features. The IBM PS/55 is said to signify a new IBM strategy: IBM intends to test many products in Japan, where the prevailing culture of consumer electronics is expected to revitalize Big Blue. According to Nobuo Mii, who represents IBM Japan, the best place to test much new electronic technology is in Japan and against Japanese manufacturers.
