City of secrets

Article Abstract:

Afghanistan is a country torn in a civil war that has claimed thousands of lives. The Pakistani-backed Taliban rule two-thirds of the county with strict Islamic laws that have left women, children, the poor, and the old with little hope for a better future. Women are forced to wear the all-encompassing veils and men are required to have fist-length beards. The Taliban are fighting on two fronts, one in the north against Abdul Rashid and Tajik commander Ahamed Shah Masood. In Afghanistan, television and music are outlawed, people die of starvation, and there is no end to the war.

Afghanistan: A Matter of Survival

Article Abstract:

Illegal logging is booming in Afghanistan, largely because of poverty and the fact that the central government has little authority beyond Kabul. Rural farmers--many of whom are actively involved in the cutting down of the country's pine and cedar forests--are hurt most by the activity, because the topsoil from cleared areas washes down on their farms and ruins them.
