More buying of cable-TV by phone companies is expected

Article Abstract:

Cable television stocks registered increases when it was announced that the Southwestern Bell Corp would acquire two cable systems in a deal worth $650 million. This was the first such cable deal in a long time, and the price paid was high. An industry observer says these facts signify the start of a competitive battle, with local phone companies buying cable businesses in each other's markets. Local telephone companies are prohibited from acquiring cable systems in their own service areas. Time Warner Inc closed up 37.5 cents on Wednesday, Feb 10, 1993, at $35. Tele-Communications Inc was up 87.5 cents, closing at $25. Comcast Corp was up $1.25, closing at $23, and Century Cable closed at $10.50, up 50 cents.
