Compaq income rose by 42.9% in 2nd quarter

Article Abstract:

Compaq Computer Corp reports that its net income rose 42.9 percent in the 2nd qtr 1992. The company's shares grew $3 or 12.2 percent on the New York Stock Exchange and closed at $27.625. Compaq earned $29 million or 35 cents a share in the quarter ended June 30 1992, compared with 1991's $20.3 million or 23 cents a share. Compaq's financial success is partially the result of Compaq's decision to offer a low-cost line of microcomputers. Compaq changed its marketing strategy when it realized it was losing market share. Compaq also benefited from the introduction of new products in June 1992 and the growing sales in computer superstores. The company reduced its research and development spending by $9 million and its sales and administration expenses by $15 million. Compaq also reduced its work force by 1,400 people in 1991.
