Computer oracle breaks silence; Steve Chen offers his view of future

Article Abstract:

Steve Chen, widely regarded as one of the most brilliant designers of supercomputers, finally makes a public appearance to discuss the product development status of his new company, Supercomputer Systems Inc. Chen has been secluded since he left Cray Research Corp in 1987. During that time Chen started Supercomputer Systems with significant financial subsidies from IBM. Chen's new company is located in Eau Claire, WI, employs 300 and the work there has been veiled in secrecy. Supercomputer Systems has been developing the SS-1, a supercomputer that Chen says will be the fastest on the market and will incorporate elements of vector and massively parallel computing. Chen emphasizes that speed is no longer the real measure of a supercomputer's worth, rather software tools and programs that make the computers more efficient will be the big advances in the coming years.

I.B.M. group is optimistic on computer; powerful mainframe, due in September, said to be vital to profits

Article Abstract:

IBM is optimistic that it will be able to introduce its powerful, new mainframe computer system, named the ES/9000 line, by Sep 1991. Industry analysts say that the success of the product is essential for the financial well-being of the computer manufacturer. IBM is also saying that the water-cooled ES/9000 line will be faster than first expected; it will now operate 2 to 2.2 faster than the existing IBM ES/3090 line of mainframes. IBM says that a coprocessor is making the performance increase possible. The top-of-the-line ES/9000 can reportedly calculate 1.457 billion floating point operations per second. IBM stock closed at $101.625 a share on Jul 30, 1991.
