Computers proliferating in classroom

Article Abstract:

Computers are being used in elementary and secondary schools around the nation, but most are being used to teach computer skills. The Center for Social Organization of Schools at Johns Hopkins University surveyed 1,000 schools and found within the 70 percent response that the average elementary school had 17 computers while the average high school had 34. Over 95 percent of the responding schools had computers, bringing the estimate up to 2.25 million computers in elementary and secondary schools in 1989. In 1983, there were only 250,000 computers in schools, making the growth ten-fold.
