Clean up or clear out

Article Abstract:

There is a region in southern Poland, the Czech Republic and eastern Germany that has higher pollution levels than elsehwere in Europe, and pollution was ignored in the region prior to 1989. Eastern European countries have started to tackle the problem, partly because they aim to join the European Union (EU). The EU is calling for tougher measures if eastern European countries are to join the EU. Water pollution and nuclear power are major issues, and unsafe nuclear plants will have to be shut down by EU entrants. There are still lower levels of household waste from eastern European households, and a higher proportion of farms in the region use organic methods.

Crackdown begins

Article Abstract:

US law enforcement agencies first began to systematically attack Mafia crime organizations in the 1930s. The American public started to know by the late 1940s the extents of the Mafia's power when the Senate conducted hearings on the Mafia's activities. By the next decade, the government concentrated its investigations on the Mafia's infiltration of labor unions, especially the Teamsters. The Kennedy administration stepped up the Mafia's prosecution. Many Americans are inclined to believe that Pres Kennedy's assassination was a conspiracy in which the Mafia was involved.
