Crackdown on smoking

Article Abstract:

Public opinion against smoking is on the increase and smokers face several social and legal restrictions. There is strong medical evidence against smoking and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned that second hand smoking increases risk of cancer and heart diseases. Anti-smoking groups, such as Action on Smoking and Health, have played a significant role in creating a strong national opinion against smoking. However, the powerful tobacco industry has hit back by claiming that medical evidence against the effects of passive smoking is exaggerated and that legislations that ban smoking violate smokers' fundamental rights.

Nixon targets PBS

Article Abstract:

Public broadcasting suffered a temporary blow during the administration of Pres Richard Nixon in the 1970s. Nixon was particularly irked with the political satires that was staple fare for the Public Broadcasting Service. He went to the extent of disapproving the proposed public broadcasting authorization bill in 1972. A subsequent compromise bill was, however, signed into law. Any attempt by the government to curtail public broadcasting was opposed by strong public opinion, most vocal of which were educational authorities, minorities and political liberals.

Marriage and divorce: Is it time to crack down on easy divorces?

Article Abstract:

No-fault divorce laws are being blamed for the high incidence of divorce in the U.S. and the increase in the number of children living in single-parent families. About one in every two marriages results in divorce, with 65% of the divorces in 1994 involving parents of minor children. The major impact of these statistics is the effect on the children, who are at greater risk for depression, poverty, and poor performance in school. Couples should work on problem-solving skills to build stronger marriages.
