The fires in New South Wales in Dec 1997 may be the beginning of the disaster that fire authorities predicted would occur in east and southern Australia in summer 1997-98. More than 200 hectares were destroyed in the Pilliga region. Three firefighters died in a fire near Lithgow. Dry conditions and cuts in fuel reduction programs are blamed for the blazes.
