Current situation; Islam's new appeal

Article Abstract:

Since the 1980s the growth of the Muslim population of the United States has been fueled by the arrival of millions of refugees from the Middle East and Asia. Native born Americans are also converting to Islam at a much higher rate as African-Americans are finding a way to deal with urban problems through the discipline of Islam. Muslims in the United States currently still find themselves objects of public disapproval and feel that they must organize politically to gain their civil rights.

Background: Islam comes to America

Article Abstract:

Muslim migration to the United States did not reach significant levels until the 1860s when people started coming directly from the Middle East. After World War I Muslims began to organize around their religion and build mosques. Divisions among Sunnis and Shiites, combined with the emigration of Muslims from Africa and Asia, has diversified the Islamic population in the United States with both positive and negative consequences.

Outlook; gaining recognition

Article Abstract:

The acknowledgement of Ramadan by Presidents Bush and Clinton has signified the growing recognition within political circles that Muslims are becoming a political force. Muslim leaders ultimately seek to have equal social and political standing with Christians and Jews in the United States, but recent events such as the World Trade Center bombing have once again added to the negative image of Islam held by most Americans.
