Current situation: Reform plan

Article Abstract:

The problems related with the preschool programs due to the federal government, which has shifted funding responsibility to states, is presented. The White House has revealed that states would receive additional federal childcare money if they established preschool training guidelines and develop a plan for coordinating childhood programs, which could include Head Start.

Article Abstract:

The spread of preschools for the poor spurred interest where some reformers pushed to make infant schools part of public-education systems. It was hoped that kindergarten would compensate for economic disadvantage in early childhood experiences, promote cultural assimilation and provide safe child care for working mothers in urban industrial slums.

Evaluating Head Start: Nationwide studies finally evaluating programs

Article Abstract:

Head Start is a huge, nationwide network of 1,800 local programs operating 20,000 centers with quality that varies from state to state. An initial data from the Head Start Impact Study showed that Head Start children make smaller but significant gains on a variety of measures than the children in the intensive experimental preschools.
