Current situation: U.S. tests under way

Article Abstract:

Several high-speed rail (HSR) projects are under way in the US, most still in the developmental stages. Amtrak is using Sweden's X2000 train on its New York to Washington route, but is unable to operate the X2000 at its top speed of 155 mph. Amtrak hopes to use the X2000 on their New York-Boston route by 1997. A $6.8 billion HSR project to link the five largest cities in Texas is in development, but is receiving stiff lobbying opposition from Southwest Airlines. Florida's transportation concerns have led to plans for maglev trains to connect major tourist centers, but financial problems have slowed development. California's HSR plans have also been delayed due to economic difficulties.

Do the current attacks on federal judges for being too "activist" threaten judicial independence?

Article Abstract:

Some analysts feel that increasing vacancies for the federal judiciary and conservative criticism of President Bill Clinton's appointments for such posts is creating a crisis. Others believe that judicial independence is compromised when Congress can regulate all tribunals but the Supreme Court, and that a judge's first duty is to the law rather than to the political bias of the person appointing them.
