Cut to the chase

Article Abstract:

Australian Treasurer Peter Costello September 2005 argued against the proposed cut in the top marginal rate of income tax, asserting that, since only the highest-earning 3% of citizens would pay that rate under the present system, it was more important to do something for the lower- and middle-income earners. Taxation is a major electoral issue and if Costello can project his views more effectively, he will do much to broaden his image and polish his prime ministerial credentials.

Rebound ace

Article Abstract:

The Australian Labor party got the budget bounce which is indicated by major opinion polls suggesting that voters failed to react with the gratitude Peter Costello expected when he presented his $59bn package of tax cuts, infrastructure grants and other benefits. The Australian prime minister's sudden push for a debate over whether Australia should go nuclear is causing division inside the ALP as it is about policy development.
