Cuts in bank expenses, services cited if Ottawa rejects mergers

Article Abstract:

Bank of Montreal will reduce annual expenses by C$800-million and cut services to improve productivity at less cost through its planned merger with Royal Bank of Canada. According to the company's chairman, Matthew Barrett, the company's merger with Royal Bank of Canada is the best option to improve efficiency without cutting jobs or eliminating low-margin business operations. Barrett hopes to continue providing full-service, coast-to-coast banking with the merger. However, if the deal is rejected by Ottawa, the company would have to pursue its current efforts to improve productivity and service.

Bronfman fans speculation of alliance

Article Abstract:

Seagram Company Ltd.'s Universal Music division may partner with a major technology firm to sell songs over the Internet. The planned marketing of music in digital format over the Internet is expected to reduce the cost of producing and selling the 550 million CDs which Universal currently manufactures. In addition, the move will boost the sale of music to older consumers who have higher income but dislike going to record stores. Universal is currently the world's biggest record company after its parent's acquisition of PolyGram N.V.
