Democracy in Africa: is democracy taking root in sub-Saharan Africa?

Article Abstract:

Democratic regimes have spread throughout sub-Saharan Africa over the past two decades, and continue to grow despite the autocratic control still evident in some nations. Eighteen countries are functionally democratic, with 35 in some sort of transition toward democracy. It is likely that US aid to Africa will decrease with Republican control of Congress, but political reform in Africa is expected to continue.
