Doman reports loss, covenant breach

Article Abstract:

Doman Industries Ltd. has posted a loss of C$74.6 million on sales of C$779.2 million in 1998, from a loss of $2.3 million on $736.7 million in 1997. The loss has been attributed to the effects of meltdown in Asian markets and limited access to the US because of a bilateral softwood lumber agreement that bans Canadian exports. The company reported an inventory worth C$372 million by the end of 1998. In addition, Doman has a term credit facility of C$100 million due in the spring of 2000.

Forest products giant MacMillan Bloedel Ltd of Vancouver, British Columbia, has posted a profit of C$42 million or 29 cents a share on sales of C$4.2 billion in 1998. The company had a loss of C$368 million or C$2.99 a share on sales of C$4.5 billion in 1997. The company attributed the rebound to the strong housing market in the US that propped up the demand and prices for its building products.
