Double vision drives 'Smart tax' debate

Article Abstract:

The movement to reform capital gains taxes in Australia is developing along two lines. One group of reformists would like the Australian laws to more closely mirror US and UK laws, include a 30% cap on the tax rate, and provide exemption for the first $1000 in tax. A second group wishes to dismantle the capital gains tax barriers to investments in biotechnology, believing the economic gains in biotechnology will represent the largest economic resurgence since the information technology revolution.

The curse of the National Museum

Article Abstract:

Australia's National Museum is under construction on the shore of Canberra's Lake Burley Griffin, but bad luck and internal disputes have delayed its opening, scheduled for 2001. Architects criticised the process of selecting the design of the building, and the museum's third director is leaving. The museum is trying to have indigenous artifacts in foreign museums returned to Australia.
