There are more than 400 web-based free e-mail services that can be accessed from any place that is connected to the Internet. Web E-mail companies rely on the promise of free e-mail to advertise their new products or services that Internet users may find appealing. Hotmail was the first freemail service before it was acquired by Microsoft. It is estimated that it serves more than 22 mil addresses.

Unsolicited emails requesting for personal information known as phishing is lucrative business for cybercriminals leading to money theft, long term fraud and in extreme cases even identify thefts. In 2003 alone it is estimated by the research firm Gartner that financial institutions globally lost about US$1,2 billion to phishers.

The origins of the glitches
